Sonia Davis | Vendors We Love

Meet Sonia.

She is, by far, Birmingham’s top wedding stationary designer. There’s none better.

We met Sonia via a mutual friend and the interwebs, and immediately fell in love with her work. She brings a unique style to each and every one of her client’s projects, and we’re always blown away when we get a peak at the final product! In addition to her wedding stationary company, Sonia Davis Design, she also owns and operates Inflations and Invitations, an awesome little invitation boutique in downtown Homewood.

If you’re looking to personalize and create wedding stationary that’s unique to you and your wedding, there’s no better person to do it for you then Sonia. We asked her to stop by the studio one day and tell us a little more about her business, and also to shoot some images of her gorgeous work …

GP: Tell us about the services you offer.

Sonia: I offer custom designed stationery for your wedding day, which can include Invitations, Save the Dates, wedding favors, thank you notes, programs and everything in between. I believe your invitation should capture your story and personalities, and in the end, give your guests a glimpse of what your day will be like. First step is meeting with the clients to get to know their tastes and style and all about their day: How did you meet? What flowers are you using? Do you have any colors in mind already? I try to get a good feel for what they are all about and use this insight in my designs to give them something that is unique and fresh. Once we decide on a direction, the fun part begins, designing the pieces! From the RSVP card to the envelope, all of their wedding stationery will have a consistent look that will bring a unique brand to their wedding…and their love story.

GP: Describe your typical client.

Sonia: My typical client is usually looking for something different than the norm. They are open to different shapes, paper texture, color…and are full of ideas on their own. Sometimes it can be difficult to find “the one” in a book or album. I love the challenge of making their ideas come to life and finding it for them. It’s very much a collaborative effort, so everything the clients shares is so valuable to getting a great design.

GP: Tell us a little about how you got in to this business.

Sonia: I have a graphic design background and was working in marketing for 4 years designing for a National Bank here in Birmingham. My twin sister was got married in 2006 and asked me to design her wedding invitations. She didn’t fit the mold of the typical bride and didn’t want a traditional invitation, so we came up with something that she loved and was truly an expression of them as a couple. From then on, I started designing invitations for friends and decided that this is what I really wanted to do full time. Soon after, I bought a invitation boutique in downtown Homewood and have been there ever since. Design is my first love, so to be able to do this for a living and work with so many talented vendors and wonderful clients is amazing.

Proper Measures | Vendors We Love

One of the cool things about the wedding business, is you find yourself working with some really talented, creative people on a weekly basis. This business is full of people with beautiful ideas about how to make a wedding day memorable, and we’re lucky enough to document those ideas for a living!

Over the next few months, Stacey and I wanted to take a little time and highlight some of the coolest wedding and event vendors that we’ve worked with over the past few years. From stationary and invite designers, to makeup artists and florists, we’re going to showcase some of the most talented professionals in our industry!

Take Wil and Stephanie for instance. Two amazingly creative people who decided to put their incredible talents to good use, and start Proper Measures … one of Birmingham’s premo wedding and event styling companies.

From the moment we laid eyes on some of their work, Stacey and I were in love with the Proper Measures style. It’s quirky, unique, and stands out in images. We invited them to the Jemison Gallery a few weeks ago for a little stylized session, and also took some time to find out a little more about the work they do for their clients …

GP: Tell us a little about the services you offer …

Stephanie: Where do I start?! We try to take care of all of the visual elements of an event so that the end result is cohesive. We handle the sweet stuff, including wedding & party cakes, custom dessert buffets, and drink stations. We do the florals for both ceremonies & receptions. We create custom wedding & party favors. We design and coordinate events from start to finish, working with clients to build an environment that represents their personalities and their relationship with each other. Proper Measures is in the business of aesthetics, so every detail is perfectly executed and makes sense when pulled together as a whole. We do a lot. We make it easy on our clients.

GP: Describe the type of client that fits your style …

Stephanie: Our type of client is fun. If you aren’t planning on having an amazing time at your wedding, then don’t hire us. Our clients are also willing to push the envelope on the traditional wedding. We love to find new & interesting ways to celebrate a couple. Instead of following a pre-made list of wedding day protocol, we talk to our clients and find out how they met, what they do for fun, what they love most about each other & we use that info to fuel the design process. The best weddings I have been to are the ones that make you say, “that is so them…” I mean, isn’t that the point?!

GP: How did you and Wil get in to the business?

Stephanie: Wil & I have been talking about doing something like this since we met. On our first date, we made cupcakes and daydreamed about opening a cute little bake shop. When we got engaged and started planning the wedding, I fell in love with the whole process. While most people dread all of the tiny details and months of stress-filled decisions, I thrived on it. We will just chock it up to my self diagnosed OCD. Wil is a pastry chef so the decision to have him make our wedding cake & dessert table was easy. I designed the florals and crafted the rest of the details. We loved every minute of it, and decided that we would put our bakery on hold & start a business that was a sort of “one stop shop” for all things pretty and sweet. At the end of February I put an end to a 12 year career in exchange for something I was finally passionate about and Proper Measures became my full time job. We have had a blast so far. We have met tons of wonderful people & talented vendors… and this is really just the beginning.

Make sure and check out Stephanie and Wil’s work on their website …

They were kind enough to do a little styling for their shoot with us, which included disco balls and cake. What more can you ask for? :-P Here’s some of my images from the shoot:

The Jemison Gallery

So after a lot of legwork, tough decisions, and one trip to Ikea in Atlanta … Stacey and I are finally ready to announce the next big step for Gresham Photography!!!

We’ve partnered with some AMAZINGLY talented wedding folks here in Birmingham to create the Jemison Gallery, a multi-purpose loft in downtown Birmingham that can be used as a meeting space, event location, or in our case … an office.

For some time now Stacey and I have been working towards moving our growing operation into a larger space. The second bedroom at the house just wasn’t cutting it anymore!

The best part about being a member of the Jemison Gallery, is the uber-cool people we’ve come to know really well throughout the whole process of shopping for a unit, furnishing, and laying out what the Gallery was going to be all about. We’re so excited to be partnered with Jessica Wright of Jessica Wright Photography, Taylor and Bo Haynie of Taylor Haynie Photography, and Nick Weeks of Superium Productions.

One of the coolest aspects of the space has been getting to know our fellow tenants as wedding professionals and friends! We’re so excited for what the Jemison Gallery has done and will do for all of our businesses, and can’t wait to share it with our clients and fellow wedding vendors!

So without further delay, here’s a few snapshots of the main consult area in the Gallery. The office area and kitchen are still a work in progress, so we’ll leave those a mystery until they’re complete!

P.S. – Make sure to stay tuned for a little announcement about our grand opening party at the Jemison Gallery. It’s gonna rock!
